Edward Roberts Court

The Edward Roberts Court project ran from July 2019 to February 2020 and involved the installation of an amphitheatre in a very tight and busy environment. The existing ramp structure had become worn over the years and no longer fit the aesthetic of the university. This new design from Wilson Mason included over 200 granite blocks which were quarried, precision cut and shipped from China. These blocks, which weighed up to 2 tonnes, then had to be laid using a vacuum lift system with millimetre accuracy. The biggest challenge was working to fit a brand new design to the older surroundings which had been constructed over half a century earlier.

The ERC project was opened in stages to allow easier access for the public from the lower level shops to the upper level while works progressed. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of all members of the team from beginning to end, or the working relationship between Lancaster University, Wilson Mason, Askam, and the supply chain.
