If you would like a lifelong career in construction and to earn while you learn then an apprenticeship with Askam Civil Engineering will be just for you. We currently have an opportunity for an Apprentice Groundworker to join our business and develop with us long term. You will be required to attend college one day per week and the ability to drive will be a necessity as time goes on.
Groundworkers are the first trade onto a construction site and they work closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications to prepare the site ready for the structural building works to take place. Their work includes setting out and preparing the site ready for foundations to be laid and the structural work to begin, excavations, installing drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways and carrying out the finished hard landscaping. As time goes by and your capabilities grow training will be extended to machinery handling such as dumpers, rollers and fork lifts and of course all hand-held tools.
As your skills and confidence grow there will be opportunities for you to take on more responsibilities.
You will need:
- To be of a practical nature: In this field of work people are required to look at alternative solutions to tasks. Being able to apply knowledge and create alternative suggestions is a valuable asset.
- To be pro-active personality. It is important you are asking questions and actively seeking to further your understanding in all aspects.
- To be a logical thinker. The ability to work through tasks in a strategic manor is important, especially on larger projects where there are countless pieces of information to digest.
- To have strong interpersonal skills. Within this line of work you will encounter people from all walks of life, having the ability to interact with them in a suitable manor is necessary.
